Instructions.Things You'll Need:
•String mop head or thick, soft, cotton string
•Scissors
•Fabric scraps
•Embroidery floss
•Fiber fill stuffing
•Lace, doilies, and/or ribbons
•Needle
•Thread
Step
1Start with a string mop head. The easiest to work with would be one you would find in a craft store made just for making into mop dolls. You may also find a suitable one in the housewares department of another store. If you can't find a suitable mop head, you can make one out of cotton string. You can cut a piece of heavy cardboard about 15" long (or desired size). Wind the string around the cardboard until it's the thickness you desire. Tie a piece of string tightly in the center and cut your mop head off the cardboard at the other end.
Step
2
Gather a section of strings on each side to make the arms. Braid these two sections and tie and trim the ends. You can leave the arms hanging at the sides or tie them in front. You can tie them with the "hands" pointing upward as if the doll is praying.
Step
3Determine where the waist will be and tie a string around it. Smooth down the rest of the strands to look like a skirt.
Step
4
For a head, cut two circles about 3 " in diameter (or desired size). On one of the circles, embroider a face. (You may omit the face if you want to give it an Amish doll look.) Sew the circles together, leaving an opening for turning right side out and stuffing. Cut notches around the circle near the seam and turn right side out. Stuff and stitch closed. Hand stitch the head to the top of the mop. I added hair by hand-stitching strands of yarn to the center top of the head with a needle and thread and a back stitch. I attached the yarn strands to the sides of the head like pigtails.
Another option for a head is to use a large wooden bead or wooden ball. Bring up a few strands of the mop and put through the hole and knot at the top. Paint on a face.
You may also purchase a pre-made head.
(If your mop is long enough, you can make its head by tying a string around all the strands before you make the arms and form the rest of the doll below that.)
Step
5Dress the doll. You can tie a lacy handkerchief or doily around its waist with a ribbon for an apron. You can also tie a piece of lace or doily over its shoulders like a shawl. A lace doily can be folded in half or gathered in the center and sewn on the back for angel wings. You can add a hat, bonnet, angel halo, or anything you desire.
